“The Aids Orphans in sub Saharan Africa is a looming threat to the future and will reach 25 million by 2010 with 30,000 children dying every day”.
   

Community-based care:
AMCARE cares for over 200 patients infected with HIV & AIDS and/or TB and their families in their communities.

  • As part of AMCARE’s home-based care programme, social workers and caregivers take care of the basic needs of patients and their families, including medication management, bathing, dressing wounds etc.
  • Caregivers accompany patients to the clinic or hospital or hospice as needed.
  • Individual counselling meets the psycho-social needs of those infected and affected.
  • Support groups assist people to develop positive, healthy lifestyles.
  • Social workers assist in the application of disability grants.
    Food parcels are distributed to those in need.
  • Food gardens meet nutritional needs and create income-earning opportunities the event of death, AMCARE assist with funeral arrangements, legal processes and counselling family members.
   

Specially committed AMCARE workers also meets the specific needs of more than 300 orphans and vulnerable children, supplying school clothes and shoes, assisting with registration for and providing psychological counselling,

 
VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) and Wellness Clinic

In partnership with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, a VCT and Wellness Clinic, based at AMCARE’s premises, is dedicated to the prevention and early detection of health problems such as HIV & AIDS, Tuberculosis, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Mother to Child Diseases.
Over 1000 community members have benefited from the VCT and Wellness Clinic over the past two years.
The clinic employs a full-time occupational health nurse and a counselor.
The clinic offers a full range of services to provide holistic care from testing, diagnosis, pre- and post-test counselling, advice about self-care and medical care, and arranging transportation to hospitals and clinics for treatment.
Patients are referred to AMCARE’s social workers when they require Social Work counseling, food parcels, home-based care or other assistance.
