The AMCARE Board is essentially a decision-making body. The AMCARE Board has neither the time nor the resources to enact every decision itself and so must delegate to Committees (e.g. Fund-raising Committee) and management a great deal of authority.
In pursuing its key purpose, the AMCARE Board faces a uniquely demanding set of responsibilities and challenges, the complexity of which can be seen in some of the seemingly contradictory pressures it faces:
The AMCARE Board must manage AMCARE but simultaneously be accountable to the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Alberton Methodist Church and the Gauteng Provincial Government;
The AMCARE Board must simultaneously be entrepreneurial and drive AMCARE forward while keeping it under prudent control;
The AMCARE Board is required to be sufficiently knowledgeable about the workings of AMCARE to be answerable for its actions, yet be able to stand back from the day-to-day management and retain an objective and holistic view;
The AMCARE Board must be sensitive to the pressures of short-term issues and yet be responsive to broad term trends;
The AMCARE Board must be knowledgeable about local issues and yet be aware of non-local influences, both potential and actual;
The AMCARE Board is expected to be focused upon the needs of AMCARE, whilst simultaneously expected to act responsibly towards its employees, the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Alberton Methodist Church and Gauteng Provincial Government.
The Management are responsible for the operations of AMCARE and are accountable to the AMCARE Board. The AMCARE Board remains ultimately responsible for AMCARE and any actions taken on its behalf. In all its tasks, the AMCARE Board is assisted and advised by the Management of AMCARE. The Management will make appropriate recommendations for Board approval of any of the tasks of the Board that will ensure AMCARE's efficiency, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
