Ikhaya LeThemba is an 8-storey shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual offences run by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
Ikhaya Lethemba can accommodate a maximum of 150 women with their children. Based on individual assessments made at admissions, a victim can be accommodated for a maximum of nine months at Ikhaya.
131 women and 113 children have been accommodated at Ikhaya since October 2006.
Ikhaya houses a multi-disciplinary team able to render a variety of essential services within one Centre. Victims have access to medico-legal services, Court preparation for children and adults, child assessment and specialized counseling from Teddy Bear Clinic for those children who were physically and sexually abused or traumatized.
The Social Workers of AMCARE are responsible for the Social Work service to the residents at Ikhaya Lethemba. 15 stipend paid volunteers are also utilized in this service.
AMCARE provides Social Work, preventative education and psychological counselling.
